Traffic Shaping and Quality of Service
Better service without interruption.
The Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is primarily focused on identifying, classifying and stopping known and unknown threats within your network. The SecureConnect IPS is an integral component of the managed firewall and security solution, providing complete, real-time protection against increasingly sophisticated attacks.
Ensure that your card transactions do not experience service delays or interruptions by implementing the Quality of Service (QoS) feature from SecureConnect. QoS eliminates interruptions in network traffic by identifying and prioritizing different types of traffic and assigning that traffic with priority levels based on its importance to the organization. To use SecureConnect QoS effectively, we help organizations identify three different types of traffic:
- Traffic that is important to the organization (i.e., card transactions)
- Traffic that makes intensive use of bandwidth (i.e., customer Internet usage such as videos or music)
- Traffic that is sensitive to latency (i.e., voice or telephone)
SecureConnect Quality of Service uses the following techniques to ensure proper use of bandwidth:
Traffic Shaping
Traffic Shaping uses buffering and smoothing to regulate traffic flows based on packet rate. Packets that exceed thresholds are stored in a buffer for later transmission. Unlike policing, traffic shaping attempts to avoid dropping packets as it may add to latency as packets are buffered and then transmitted.
Queuing
Queuing is used with buffering to determine the priority of packets to be transmitted. Traffic types are assigned to high, medium and low priority levels. If there is not enough bandwidth to transmit all traffic, high priority traffic is processed before medium and low priority traffic. Most often, card transactions will be assigned a high priority level and will always be processed first.
